Around Austin-Music-Brad Mehldau performed solo piano at The Paramount Theatre Tuesday,March 26th 2024. In the 90 minute show, Brad played music of the masters blending influences from Classical (Bach), Jazz and Contemporary Popular. The set included music of John Coltrane, of Elliot Smith, of Radiohead and of his own. Two highlights were his renditions of Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady" and Neil Young's "Old Man." In closing he referenced Jimi Hendrix with "Hey Joe" and chose as an encore Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed." In each piece Brad weaves in all his influences, from his "Personal Songbook." With his own compositions he appears truly free and they demonstrate his ability to create music that has passages that are wonderfully complex and that are airy-containing just the right harmonic quality. The near capacity audience was very attentive, completely quiet during his recital and greatly appreciative. Brad's considered to be one of the most influential pianist of the last 20 years. His tour continues and includes many European stops. See bradmehldaumusic.com for more including the Rick Beato interview on YouTube in which they dialog extensively on Brad's influences and methods.
