Julies Whittier-1st Black Letterman at UT


Texas College Football-Nearly two years ago, Friday November 27th 2020, the University of Texas, according to ESPN, "unveiled a new 12 1/2-foot statue of trailblazer Julius Whittier, the Longhorn/s first Black letterman, outside the north end of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium..." Julius who went on after his senior year, playing on the 1970 National Championship Team and earning a degree in philosophy, to earn a graduate degree (LBJ School of Public Affairs) and law degree (UT) and worked "most of his life as a senior prosecutor in the Dallas County District Attorney's office before retiring in 2012." Other notes "UT admitted the first black undergraduates" on August 1, 1956 (Source https://diversity.utexas.edu) and first black football players in 1963 (Source https://theclio.com). Darrell Royal was the athletic director and head football coach in 1963.
