Volksgarten Österreichische Bundesgarten-Monument to Elisabeth-A Hero of the People

Around Vienna-The Volksgarten is graced with a monument to Duchess Elisabeth (1837-1898) the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary as she was married to Emperor Franz Joesph. She was also known as Sisi as she was the sister of Duchess Helene of Bavaria. Helene was to marry Franz Joesph I but he in a classic tale of "Love At First Sight" fell for Sisi. Elisabeth though struggled with the formal life and would travel much for solitude. During one such occasion, September 10th 1898-at age 60, she was stabbed to death on the shores of Lake Geneva by a man intent to kill any sovereign. This was especially tragic as Elisabeth is to have cared and given much to "the people."
